Alone in the Dark 4: the New Nightmare is a survival horror video game. It was first released in 2001 and was developed by Darkworks. It is published by Infogrames.
The storyline behind the fourth of the five installments of this series begin on Halloween of 2001. Charles Fiske, the partner and best friend of Edward Camby, has been found dead on Shadows Island off the coast of Massachusetts. Camby heads the investigation to find the murderer of his friend and learns of a secret investigation Fiske had been working. This case involved trying to locate ancient tablets that possessed incredible yet dangerous powers. Camby takes over the investigation hoping it will lead to Fiske's killers. It is up to the gamer to locate the tablets and solve the case of Fiske's death.
The gamer has the option to play as Camby or Aline. When choosing to play as Aline, the game has a perspective that is more centered on puzzle solving. Regardless of who the gamers chooses to control, the games is has to defeat the living shadows known as the Creatures of Darkness as well as solve the case.
A film adaption of the game series was released in 2005. The film was a direct sequel to this game, though some parts of the film were contradictory to the game. The film was very harshly criticized and did not do well at the box office.
