Dutch computer programmer Wouter van Oortmerssen created the video game "Cube" to demonstrate the power of his open source engine of the same name. While similar in theme to first-person shooters like "Doom" and "Quake," "Cube" forsakes the aforementioned games' dungeon-crawling interior warfare for open-air combat across a sprawling outdoor landscape. Players can collect an assortment of weapons and power-ups while roaming the countryside gunning down monstrous foes. The game engine uses a 2D height map to create a pseudo-3D environment, employing slopes and other tricks to overcome any dimensional limitations. Single-player mode allows for either a standard mode, in which items and monsters remain in fixed positions and never respawn, or a deathmatch mode that features respawning items and requires 10 monster kills per skill level. Multiplayer features eight distinct modes, including Free for All, Team Play, and Tactics Arena, which limits players to two weapons and two ammo packs each.
