There are fewer player choices available in Mafia 2 than with most other contemporary games. If you know this going in, you won't be disappointed and can even learn to like it. In fact, some players view it as being a character in a story revealed chapter after chapter.

The game, sequel to Mafia:The City of Lost Heaven, is regimented in that players must fulfill a series of assignments on a course set within the open world of Empire Bay. Expect to spend a lot of time driving, whether it's to a job, or from. There are plenty of mid-mission car scenarios as well.

Since the game is set during the classic mobster era, you will drive cars from the 1940s and carry guns used around the time of World War II. Look for advertising, architecture and even a soundtrack featuring music from that time throughout the game.

The protagonist/antagonist is Vito Scaletta, a poor Empire Bay resident and Italian immigrant. Vito becomes enmeshed in the mob in an effort to contribute financially to his blood family.

Mafia II differs from many games in that it serves up a number of truly emotional moments as Vito experiences the heart-wrenching realities of life in the mob.

Ultimately the game shares more in common with a movie than a true game. As such, however, it's worth exploring.
