Before the movie The Matrix hit theaters in 1999, Remedy Entertainment, a small game development studio in Finland, began work on a shooting game that would change the action genre forever. The game, which is now the first of a trilogy called Max Payne, introduced the concept of bullet time to 3rd person shooters. Bullet time allowed players to significantly slow down game time, giving the player nearly super-human ability to aim, fire weapons, and even dodge bullets. The innovative controls created a whole new element of game play for the player. Rather than being a god like figure, Max is a vulnerable human with some special abilities. Make a simple mistake, and death come quickly.

Max Payne tells the story of a disaffected inner city cop who's trying to unravel a story of corruption and a family stricken by tragedy. The world in which Max inhabits is extremely dark and disturbed. Gangsters control the streets and murderous adversaries lurk around every corner. There isn't a single moment in the game play where the player can relax and enjoy the surroundings. The streets are infested with enemies, and it's the player's job to rid the world of it's vile criminal element.

Max Payne is one of the first video games to incorporate strong film noir elements into a compelling game story. While some of the graphics and sound design leave a lot to be desired compared to modern titles, the overall experience of the story more than makes up for the pitfalls. There's never a moment where the player feels completely satisfied with the progress that's been made, and that obsessive drive to finish the game perfectly reflects the main character's impulsive momentum forward.
