Metal Slug, a cartoon run-and-gun action game that can be over the top at times, was originally a hit arcade game during the ‘90s. The outrageous enemies, explosions, weapon options, and incredible visual style had teenagers changing their allowance into quarters every week at the local arcade. Fun to play alone and a blast to play cooperatively with a friend, Metal Slug’s intense action formula helped create an instant arcade classic.
Based around two military factions, the Regular Army and the Rebellion, Metal Slug is the story of these armies fighting for global dominance and control. The opening sequence reveals that the Rebellion had just dealt a severe blow to the Regular Army by stealing their new tank prototypes. The fate of the Regular Army falls squarely on the shoulders of two soldiers, Tarma and Marco, to recover the stolen prototypes and make the Rebellion army leader pay for what he did.
As the shooting begins, the plot is fairly insignificant as the concern is now to blast everything in sight without getting hit. Starting out with just a basic pistol, players can eventually upgrade to rocket launchers, heavy machine guns, and flamethrowers after killing some enemies and dodging a few bullets. Some levels have tanks that provide extra fire power and defense, helping players blast through enemy lines faster than ever before with a powerful front cannon.
Those looking to kill a few hours by killing Rebellion troops will have a blast with the retro arcade game play that Metal Slug offers. The co-op game play in Metal Slug takes the excitement of this game up two notches, and is sure to become a competition for the highest score. The long history behind this Neo Geo action game makes it an excellent choice for retro and newbie gamers of all ages.
