Praised as the best Pro Evolution Soccer game since the Playstation 2 era, PES 2016 makes an explosive entrance that commands attention. Identifying a single point of genius in this game might be difficult, however. Where the game excelled was in improving the minute details that brought the game up to a new level. Arguably, the undisputed best elements lay in the physics and the AI. The duels for the soccer ball and overall control feels more organic and less predictable than ever before.

PES always took the approach of being a wild card with more strategic gameplay, and now that strategy could compare to the fluency and faster pace of the FIFA franchise. AI improvements to the game have made it so that you can pass the ball to your teammates without fear. You can also bask in the comfort of knowing your team will defend you when you have the ball. Many times, they will even position themselves well for the pass in a hostile sea of players. You feel more like a single unit in PES 2016.

To win, you will have to play with a focus on every part of the game. Oversights can cost you a goal or even the match. Reflexes, keeping calm and accurate goal shooting are the key to winning. Where the game falls flat on its face, however, relates to the graphics. FIFA offers much better graphics than PES 2016, and the outdated graphics engine means you will see less dynamic animations. Nevertheless, the game comes filled to the brim with enjoyable content, and the action never stops until the match ends.

Pros

  • Tons of modes to keep you occupied
  • Excellent physics and AI
  • Action with moment-to-moment tension

Cons

  • Fewer licenses than in FIFA
  • Horrible graphics are unforgivable for a PC game
