The hotly anticipated game RAGE, finally released in late 2011, takes place in a Road Warrior inspired world where an asteroid has struck the Earth and left only a few small pockets of humanity alive. Gangs of bandits and mutants roam the wastelands looking for fresh victims as players are charged with completing missions while doing their best to survive. In many ways comparable to Fallout 3, the core difference is that RAGE features a dynamic, innovative and very intense action-based engine.
That's not to say that the game is without any RPG elements at all. In fact, some of the most fun to be had in the game involves the inventory system, looting and playing with various types of ammo. Still, the heart of this game is in shooting and driving in a sort of post-apocalyptic Grand Theft Auto meets Half Life 2.
Customization is a lot of fun. Players can trade recipes for custom built vehicles and weapons as they play, creating an environment where no two play-throughs are ever quite the same.
The story of the game looks into some interesting territory as a fascistic empire expands its grip across the wastelands and resistance members attempt to thwart these efforts. It's a question of rebuilding society and asking whether the people who pick up the pieces have the right ideas in mind. While keeping the focus on the action, this story offers just enough detail to give players something to think about after the game is over.
The revolutionary engine offers brand new depth for physics and lighting effects, creating an uber-believable game world. There seem to be fewer and fewer steps forward left to make in terms of gaming graphics, and RAGE takes them. Combining an amazing world with hot action, RAGE is one of the most groundbreaking games in years.
