Slender the Arrival is a fully realized horror adventure that delivers frights in effective ways.

Slender began as an experimental horror game that was appreciated on some levels but criticized in regard to gameplay and visuals. Slender the Arrival is a full game built on that initial experience and which overcomes many of the criticisms levied against it.

One of the big differences between the two games is visuals. The game looks superb now, and that makes exploration a much more interesting process. The game also has a rich narrative that takes you from beginning to end through a complete story. The game is also quite effective at delivering its dark atmosphere, and even when you’re walking through the woods during day, you can feel it.

It features three story chapters over three distinct areas, and while it isn’t a long game, it certainly won’t feel short to the player discovering its secrets for the first time. The game also has a scrapbook component, which you’ll fill with various collectibles you find throughout the levels. Without Googling, finding all those items the first time around won’t be easy, and collecting them all can actually give you another reason besides different choices to play through the game again.

Some critics have referred to Slender as a walking simulator, and it’s true that there are long periods of uneventful exploration. It’s worth noting that those lulls are what make the moments of activity so impactful, but if that sounds boring, then Slender may seem like that more often than not.

Pros

  • Rich narrative and dark atmosphere
  • Three story chapters over three areas
  • A scrapbook to fill with collectibles
