Bloodmasters is a free and open-source old-school shooter that uses the classic top-down vantage rather than the first-person view that is so prevalent today. It’s a multiplayer game only, and it supports a series of multiplayer modes: capture the flag, death match, team death match and scavenger. It’s very popular for LAN parties because it costs nothing, so can support very large LAN parties inexpensively.
Bloodmasters is not simply a recreation of classic top-down shooters. Instead, it recreates the genre in a number of clever ways. The graphics are quite good, very defined and precise, and the game supports most of the large resolutions used today. In addition, Bloodmasters maps have a height component, so just like modern shooters, players can try to claim the upper ground in order to take the advantage.
The game has a wide range of maps, weapons and power-ups, and in addition to selecting mode, players can define the rules for each game. Weapons are not as straightforward as you might think; grenade launchers, for instance, can actually drop grenades in on unsuspecting enemies over walls. So Bloodmasters is a game that gamers can really sink their teeth into. Since the game is multiplayer only, perhaps the greatest hurdle is finding the games needed to overcome the learning curve.
