Canabalt is a deliberately minimalist black-and-white game. While the gameplay couldn't be simpler, the execution is so beautiful and addictive that you'll find yourself being drawn back again and again.
Against a background of giant robots destroying a city (why? who cares?), your avatar is running for his life across the rooftops. And he won't stop running. All you can do is tap a key to make him jump from building to building, as well as hurdling obstacles that will slow him down or even kill him, leaping off crumbling buildings before they collapse under him, and smashing through plate glass windows. The only goal is to keep him running for as long as possible. Your score is based on the distance you manage to cover. Miss a jump or hit the wrong kind of obstacle, and it's game over.
Each time you play, the course is determined randomly, so there's no way to plan ahead. You just have to be ready for whatever the game throws at you. A viral hit and an award-winner, Canabalt shows that flashy graphics and complex control schemes aren't necessary to make an entertaining game.
