The Day of Defeat Mod is actually a new multi-player game that utilizes the Half-life/Counter-Strike engine. The game pits you as a soldier either on the Allied or Axis side, choosing from different classes available. Each class has its own benefits and disadvantages, creating a platoon-like feel of each team. A unique attribute of how each match is handled, other than its objective-based matches, is that respawns are done in waves, called reinforcements, to simulate how armies would receive reinforcements in waves. The game has been lauded as an example of the home-grown mods made by the community that have achieved success in the general gaming community. Though sharing some similarities with other World War II based games like Battlefield and Call of Duty, the game offers a unique FPS experience that is quite memorable with good replay value due to its catering towards online gameplay. The game has been successful enough to warrant a remake using the Source engine.
