Frets on Fire X, sometimes abbreviated as simply FoFiX, is a rhythm game developed by multiple individuals that aims to provide a similar experience to console games Rock Band and Guitar Hero. Unlike the retail games it is based on, Frets on Fire X is developed and supported entirely by a small community of independent developers and coders. As such, it is provided for free and is able to be modified to a player's liking. Rather than purchasing songs to play in the game, users can import songs from their own collection or find various charted songs online to play.

Anyone who has played Guitar Hero or Rock Band will be familiar with the gameplay of Frets on Fire X. Using a guitar controller, players strum and hold down keys in rhythm with the colored gems as they move on screen. The aim is to hit every note exactly in order to maintain a streak and score as many points as possible. Scores from each song can then be compared with other users around the world. Missing too many notes in a row will cause the player to fail the song.

The main appeal of Frets on Fire X is the fact that PC gamers are very limited in terms of choice when it comes to rhythm games. Whereas Rock Band has been supported for years on consoles, no PC version has ever been released. Frets on Fire X is probably the best alternative available for PC gamers, and with endless amounts of songs available, players will never be bored playing a song over and over again.
