Gargoyle is an interpreter for interactive fiction games. It supports all of the major file formats for interactive fiction.

Using Gargoyle is simple. The program asks you which IF file you would like to open, which you then double click to begin. IF games are basically choose-your-own-adventure books played on a computer. The display of text is therefore central to the quality of the user experience. This is where Gargoyle shines.

Gargoyle stands out among interactive fiction players because of its stunning typography. Typographical features include subpixel rendering, gamma correction, unhinted anti-aliased fonts, kerning, and floating point text. The developer's site boasts of generous line spacing and margins. Integrated scrollback, ligatures, and smart quotes round out the typographical features.

Saving and restoring games may be annoying for new users. In order to save a game, you must type SAVE and then choose a location to save your file to. To restore, you must open the game in Gargoyle, type RESTORE, and then load the saved file.

Gargoyle was most recently updated on November 9, 2011. There are binary versions available for Windows, Macintosh, and Ubuntu Linux. There is also an installer available for Windows. Gargoyle is free software, licensed under the GPL.
