Mini Ninjas is a game from IO interactive, best known for Hitman and Kane and Lynch. Mini Ninjas is a far cry from those 2 games, where gritty, bloody mature action is front and center. Mini Ninjas is instead about cute ninjas slashing their way through a cartoony forest and village.
The graphics are what most people will remark on. It is cel shaded in a style like some recent Nintendo games. They are very easy on the eyes and makes the game a joy to look at. Soft leaves drift to the ground in a gorgeous little village. Even though the game came out in 2009, the game still looks great.
In the game you control a group of ninjas that each have a different ability. You switch between the ninjas to defeat enemies and solve puzzles. This, along with the cute graphics, would be a great base for a kids game, if the controls weren't a pain. It is so frustrating to try to quickly switch to the ninja you need, only to miss selecting him, and be doomed to failure. And you can't even explore the beautiful forest, as invisible walls and impenetrable tree walls are everywhere.
It is unfortunate that such a cute idea and great graphics are ruined by poor controls. Hopefully IO can avoid these pitfalls in their next game.
