The Need for Speed series of auto racing video games has been going strong since the mid-1990s. Some titles in the series have been critically acclaimed and others critically panned. Need for Speed: Shift belongs in the critically-acclaimed category, particularly after the series released a couple of disappointing titles before 2009.

In a way, Need for Speed: Shift signals a fresh start for the series. A new game development team was brought in to create an effective balance of racing simulation and arcade thrills. The street racing locales made popular by video game racing titles of the early 21st century have been replaced by realistic raceways such as Laguna Seca and Willow Brook.

The car-handling controls and the cockpit racing view make Need for Speed: Shift a realistic and extremely fun game. The dashboard design faithfully replicates the dozens of vehicle models in the game, which range from sports cars such as the Audi TT to supercars such as the Lamborghini Gallardo. The clever way the camera moves while the player is behind the virtual dashboard makes the game very exciting. For example, popping the clutch and accelerating will result in the camera evoking the feel of a driver being suddenly thrust forward and then slammed back.

This Need for Speed title abandoned the gratuitous underground and outlaw racing atmosphere of previous titles. To make up for ambiance, a great soundtrack and a very efficient interface allows players to really get into the joys of auto racing.

Although this is a welcome title in the crowded segment of auto racing video games, Need for Speed: Shift shares a shortcoming with competitors: Vastly skilled racing opponents. To counter this letdown, players can go online and compete against a vibrant community of video game racing peers.
