Privateer is built on the mold of many classic space games, from the heydey of pc gaming. If you fondly remember Freespace or Wing Commander, you will find a lot here that is very familiar. Privateer is actually a fan remake of an old Wing Commander game, so the two are very similar in design. But do they match in quality as well?
The fans took the old game and remade it with 3d graphics and a more realistic spaceflight model. The gameplay is based on a lot of flying around, accepting missions, and blasting your enemies in dogfights. The game handles this well. But the real thrill in these types of games is the open ended galaxy. You don't have to follow the campaign and be led around from mission to mission. You can ignore it entirely and make your fortune in the galaxy by any means necessary. This is intact in Privateer, but with such a big world, there are a lot of balance issues. There are many unfinished or plain missing bits and lots of bugs. There is par for the course with fan made games, as they are usually just a free time project.
But the game is free and still a lot of fun. If you miss the old days of space sims, this should be right up your alley.
