What is Never Second in Rome?

This turn-based historical RPG puts you in charge of a century of soldiers in Julius Caesar's army just before the Gallic War, as a new governor's arrival sets events in motion. Across chapters of text-based events and historical battles, you train your unit, appoint staff, face attribute and skill checks, and direct soldiers in combat.

For you if...

  • +you enjoy detailed Roman history and text-heavy campaigns
  • +you like training soldiers and managing a small unit
  • +you want turn-based battles with detailed combat systems

Not for you if...

  • you dislike dice rolls shaping battle outcomes
  • you want quick battles with straightforward combat rules
  • you prefer action over reading and skill checks

What players say

81% of 643 reviews are positive · 63% of 22 in the last 30 days

Players praise the historical detail, writing, and chance to train and command a century. Many say larger battles feel slow, confusing, and overly dependent on dice rolls, limiting the impact of their decisions.
